How to Delete Folders on a Mac Desktop

The Mac dock, located across the bottom of your desktop, allows you to quickly access the programs and features you frequently use. Your trash can is located on the dock for convenience, and you can use it to delete items on your desktop (or elsewhere) that you no longer need.

  • Unlock the folder if it is locked. Right-click the folder’s icon and click “Get Info.” If there is a check mark next to the word “Locked,” uncheck the box so you will have permission to modify the folder.

  • Click on the folder that you want to delete and drag it to the trash icon located on the dock.

  • Empty the trash if you want to completely delete the file from your computer. Right-click on the trash icon and click “Empty Trash,” or double-click the icon and click the “Empty” button.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you decide you need the file, you can drag it back to the desktop from the trash as long as you have not emptied the trash.
  • Make sure you do not need the file before you empty the trash. If you need to get a file back after you empty the trash, you may have to purchase a data recovery program that may or may not be able to find the file.
