How to Import Images From a Sony Camcorder to iMovies

iMovie is a video editing tool that comes as part of Apple's iLife suite. It provides users with the ability to alter video footage by creating cuts, applying filters and adding special effects. iMovie can also import video footage from an outside source--such as a camcorder--including Sony camcorders.

Instructions

    • 1

Open iMovie by double-clicking the iMovie icon.

    • 2

Ensure there is footage to import from the Sony camcorder. This can be done by setting the camera to "Playback" mode and then pressing "Play."

    • 3

Set the camera to VTR mode. If your Sony camera does not have a VTR mode setting, then set it either to "Computer" mode or to "PC" mode.

    • 4

Plug the connector cable into the camera; it will be located at the back of the camera, near the eyepiece. Depending on the camera model, your connector cable will either be Firewire or USB.

    • 5

Plug the other end of the cable into the computer.

    • 6

Wait for iMovie to automatically detect the camera. It will then open the "Import From" window. Sometimes the window will not appear. If this happens, simply click the camcorder icon in the iMovie window.

    • 7

Click the "Automatic" switch so that iMovie will automatically import footage. Next, click "Import All" to import all images.

    • 8

Select the destination where you want to save the imported image file, then select whether to add the imported footage to a pre-existing iMovie file. Once you have made your selections, click "Okay."

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have trouble with the import, ensure that your connector cables are properly connected to the camera and the computer ports.

  • If your camcorder is tape-based, you must use a Firewire cable.

  • Do not disconnect your camera during the import process.
