How to Get My Phone Number on the Do Not Call Registry
Unwanted sales calls are a nuisance at best. At worst, they can be maddening, arriving during dinner, while you're getting ready for work, or driving. The problem became so aggravating that Congress passed a law to make it illegal to call people who do not want to be called. All you have to do is register your number. According to the FTC, 157 million phone numbers are on the National Do Not Call Registry, and the number is growing.

Go to donotcall.gov. Click the "Register Now" link.

Read the short instructions and enter up to three personal phone numbers with area codes.They can be land lines or cell numbers as long they are personal numbers. The National Do Not Call Registry is not for business or fax numbers. They will send you a confirmation for each number you enter.

Go to your email account and look for one email from the National Do Not Call Registry for each number you registered. Within 72 hours, you must open each email and click on the link in it to complete your registration. You must do this separately for each number. Opening one email and clicking on the link will not put all the numbers you want in the registry.

Verify your registration, if you want. Wait 24 hours, then go back to donotcall.gov. Look at the right side of the screen and click on the Verify a Registration link. When the link opens, enter the phone numbers in question. You will receive a verification email to which you do not need to respond.

Your registration on the National Do Not Call list does not expire.
You can remove your phone number from the list. You have to call the above toll-free 888 number from the telephone number you want to remove.
Your registration will not go into effect for 31 days. After that, unwanted sales calls should stop.
