How to Install Engineered Click-Lock Flooring

Click-lock flooring is a type of engineered floor planking that's made to click together without nails or glue. Instead, it's held down by the floor trim. This ``floating floor'' style allows for easy installation over just about any surface: wood, tile, vinyl, anything but carpeting. Most systems do require a rigid foam underlayment to cushion the floor. Like all wood floors, it's important to leave a gap at the edges (ultimately covered by trim) to allow for expansion and movement of the wood. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Roll out the foam underlayment along the wall where you want to start. Cut it at the end with a razor knife. Roll out the next row of underlayment in the same manner, taping the two rows together length-wise with underlayment tape. Continue until you've got layer of foam underlayment over the whole floor.

    • 2

Set the first course of floorboards along the wall, clicking them together end to end. Cut the last piece on your miter saw as needed. Keep a 1/4 inch space between the edge of the board and the wall.

    • 3

Set subsequent courses in place by clicking the sides together. Make sure the ends of the boards don't line up from course to course. Cut the end pieces as needed to fit. Keep a 1/4 inch gap at the walls all around.

    • 4

Cut and install floor trim around the edges, covering up the 1/4 inch gap and holding down the floor. Use a trim nailer to nail the floor, shooting the nails into the wall rather than down through the floor.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear eye protection when you use a miter saw.
