Locate a flight facility that has helicopters. FBOs (fixed base of operation) that handle helicopter flights and rentals (where you can fly your own) normally have offices and hangars at airports. Use the Internet or a phone book to search for one in your area

Inquire about the rates. The type of helicopter and length of the flight will determine the cost of your trip. Since most pilots work on a rotating schedule at their FBO, the availability and qualifications of the pilots scheduled to work may determine who flys the helicopter on the day of your trip.

Ask if the company offers an "introductory flight" for scenic tours of your area. This will generally give you 30 minutes to an hour of flight time, normally at a discounted rate. These types of flights give you an opportunity to meet your pilot and experience a short ride around the local area. Also, if you are interested in learning to fly the helicopter, ask for a mini-lesson of what your flight training would cover.

Schedule your flight. Unlike commercial airlines, most FBOs allow you to schedule a flight for the time that is most convenient for you. Some might require a few days or up to a week's notice if you have requested a certain helicopter and might charge a cancellation fee if you decide not to take the flight.

If you plan to be at your destination for several hours or overnight, you should expect to compensate the pilot you have hired for both the flight time during the trip as well as their wait time while you're on the ground.
