How to Wire Two Car Batteries in a Series
Automotive batteries provide electrical power to an automobile. However, these simple, yet powerful devices can be used to provide a power source for other applications, such as a solar power grid, or as a backup power source in the event of a power outage.
Some devices may require more voltage than a single automotive battery can provide, thus making it necessary to use two or more batteries to satisfy the voltage requirements. To maximize the voltage output of two or more batteries, these batteries must be connected in a series circuit.
Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 2 automotive batteries
- 4 battery terminal connectors
- Electrical wire
- Soldering iron and solder
- Electrical pliers
- Adjustable wrench
Instructions

1
Cut a length of wire, and strip each end of a ½ inch of insulation. Attach one end of the wire to one of the battery terminal connectors, and solder the connection. Attach the other end to another battery terminal connector, and solder that connection.
-
2
Loosen the battery terminal retaining bolts on the battery terminal connectors attached to the wire. Place one of these connectors on the "Negative (-)" post on the first battery. Place the other battery terminal connector on the "Positive (+)" post on the second battery. Tighten the battery terminal retaining bolts so the battery terminal connectors fit snugly on the battery posts.

Cut a second length of wire, and strip both ends of a ½ inch of insulation. Attach one of the ends to one of the remaining battery terminal connectors, and solder the connection. Loosen the terminal connector retaining bolt. Connect the battery terminal connector to the "Positive (+)" battery post on the first battery, and tighten the terminal connector retaining bolt.

Cut a third length of wire, and strip both ends of a ½ inch of insulation. Attach one of the wire ends to the last battery terminal, and solder the connection. Loosen the battery terminal connector retaining bolt. Connect the battery terminal connector to the "Negative (-)" battery post on the second battery, and tighten the terminal connector retaining bolt.
