How to Put Bias Binding on Potholders
A homemade potholder can be a quick and easy sewing project that will provide you with useful potholders to match your kitchen décor. Homemade potholders also make attractive gifts that any cook would love to receive. When you use bias binding to finish the outside edges of a potholder, the sewing project becomes even easier. Choose a bias binding that coordinates and complements the fabric of the potholder for a lovely finished potholder.
Things You'll Need
- Potholder (two fabric pieces and one batting piece)
- Double-width folded bias binding (enough to go around all outer edges of the potholder)
- Needle
- Matching thread
- Pins
- Sewing machine
- Iron
Instructions

1
Construct the potholder by placing one fabric piece on a work surface with the wrong side facing up. Place the batting piece on the fabric piece and place the second fabric piece on the batting with the right side facing up.
-
2
Pin the potholder pieces in place to hold them securely.
-
-
3
Open the folded bias binding out flat and place the bias binding around the outer edge of the potholder so half of the bias binding is on the top side of the potholder and the other half of the bias binding is on the bottom side of the potholder. Pin the bias binding in place around the entire outer edge of the potholder.
-
4
Overlap the ends of the bias binding where they meet on the potholder and fold under the top layer of bias binding ½-inch to finish the raw edge. Pin this in place.
-
5
Hand baste the bias binding in place around the entire edge of the potholder.
-
6
Stitch the bias binding in place with the sewing machine, sewing 1/8-inch away from the inner folded edge of the bias binding.
-
7
Remove the hand-basting stitches.
-
8
Iron the potholder to make the bias binding flat and even.
