How to Create a Calendar Project in Excel

There are many different available templates for creating calendar projects in Microsoft Excel. You can find templates on the Microsoft Office website for different calendar years, months and designs, including academic calendars (which span a school year), calendars with pictures or different-colored borders and calendars for previous years. You can alter calendar templates based on your individual needs and preferences.

      View the calendar templates on Microsoft Office's website (see Resources).

      Choose "Excel" from the "Filter by Product" drop-down menu in the left-hand column of the page.

      Choose the year (or multi-year calendar) you would like and browse the selection of templates.

      Choose and download a template. Rename the file "Calendar.xlt."

      Open My Computer and double-click the C drive. Open the folder "Documents and Settings" and double-click your user name.

      Open the folder "Application Data." (If you cannot see this folder, go to "Tools" and "Folder Options," click the "View" tab and select "Show Hidden Files and Folders," then click "OK.")

      Open the folder "Microsoft," then the folder "Templates." (The address bar should read "C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates.") Copy and paste "Calendar.xlt" into the "Templates" folder.

      Open Microsoft Excel go to "File" and "New." Under the menu "Templates," select "On My Computer," then double-click the "Calendar.xlt" template to open it.

      Edit the calendar's appearance. For example, you can right-click a cell and select the "Pattern" tab to change the background color, or the "Border" tab to change the border style and color. You can also change the size of the calendar cells, giving you more or less room to write, or the font used for the dates.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many of the calendar templates are for Excel 2007. Your choices may be limited if you have an earlier version of Microsoft Office.
