How to Get Into the BIOS on an HP Notebook

If you need to modify the boot order on your HP laptop, set a boot order for computer security or add new internal hardware, you will have to access the system's BIOS. Every computer manufacturer is different in the way that you access the BIOS, depending on the type and version of the BIOS installed on the computer. For an HP laptop, the BIOS can be accessed with one keystroke, but it needs to be done at the right time during the boot process in order to be effective.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the power to your HP laptop to begin the boot-up process. If your computer is already on and logged in, reboot it by clicking the "Start" button in the lower left corner of your Windows taskbar. Select the option to turn off your computer and select "Restart" in the shut-down menu.

    • 2

Press the "F10" button while your computer display is blank, or when you see the system keys display at the bottom of the screen. This will launch your system BIOS.

    • 3

Press "F10" again once you have completed your changes to save all of your settings and exit the BIOS. The computer will complete the start-up process when you exit the BIOS. Pressing "F9" while in the BIOS will reset your system's BIOS to the original factory settings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make changes in the BIOS only when you are certain of the settings you are modifying. Incorrect BIOS changes can cause boot-up failure as well as failure to recognize necessary devices.
