Instructions

    • 1

Download VNC 3.3.7 from RealVNC (see first link in References below). This is a free VNC software package that is compatible with Solaris 8 for the SPARC architecture. A version is also available on the RealVNC site for x86 architecture. VNC 3.3.7 requires an X-Windows System, so if you do not have an X-Windows System installed, consider going to www.xfree86.org to download one.

    • 2

Uncompress the downloaded file using tar, gzip or another tool of your choice.

    • 3

Decide on the directory that you want to install the VNC server to. A recommended directory choice is "/user/local/bin." This directory will be used in the following steps as an example.

    • 4

Type "./vncinstall /usr/llocal/bin" from the directory that you uncompressed the RealVNC package. This will run a script that will install the VNC server application and other supporting tools.

    • 5

Type "vncserver" in order to load the VNC server software after installation. You will be prompted to enter a password and other configuration settings prior to loading the VNC server on your system.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you need further guidance for setting up specific features of VNC 3.3.7, read the "Readme" file that is contained in the compressed file that includes the installer, or refer to the manual pages that extract into the directory where you installed VNC.
