How to Rate Women's Road Bike Shoes
Women's road bike shoes, also known as cycling shoes, are considered essential for the avid cyclist. The right shoe allows for greater cycling efficiency and foot comfort, as well as safety on long rides. Proper fit is key since shoes that fit too loosely or too tightly can result in injury or foot numbness. Although there are other specifications to consider when choosing a road bike shoe, in general, the best shoe is lightweight and aerodynamic with an extremely stiff sole.

Choose shoes designed for clipless pedals. For serious riders with clipless pedals on their bikes, having road bike shoes with cleats on the bottom specially designed to snap into clipless pedals is key to a more energy-efficient upstroke.

2
Determine the type of pedal you have on your bike. Some road bike shoes are only compatible with certain pedals, but there are adaptive systems that can be purchased from most shoe manufacturers to alleviate this problem.

The sole of the shoe should be stiff. A stiff sole provides more stability when riding to transmit power. The highest-quality road bike shoes have soles made of carbon fiber, making them lightweight and nearly impossible to bend. The most economical shoes have an injection-molded plastic sole, which are heavier and more flexible. Mid-range shoe soles may be made of plastic and carbon fiber or fiberglass to reduce weight. In general, the stiffer the sole, the more expensive the shoe.

The fit should be comfortable, but snug. Choose road bike shoes that are designed specifically for women since there are vast anatomical differences in the male and female foot. There should be no gaps when wearing the shoe, the tongue should be padded but not bunch and there should be little toe room at the front of the shoe. The heel cup should hold the heel in place through the entire rotation of the pedal. Stand on the toes when trying on shoes to determine if the heel stays in place as it should.

There should be no pressure points when the shoes are securely fastened. Road bike shoes may be fastened with laces, buckles or straps. If pressure is felt when the shoes are fastened, blood flow may be restricted, leading to numbness of the foot. If there are laces on the shoe, they should not be loose or able to get caught in the chainwheel when riding.
