1
Find a silk flower to decorate. If the flowers you have available are on plastic stems, use sharp scissors to snip the flower from the stem. Once you've cut the stem, you can lift off and discard the plastic piece in the center of the flower.

2
Attach beads in random spots on the flower by threading a needle with thread that matches the color of the petals. Knot the end of the thread. Pull the needle up through the flower and through the center of a tiny seed bead sold at bead and craft shops. Push the needle down through the flower, knot the thread in back and use scissors to snip the excess. Repeat the process with additional beads until you're pleased with the look.

3
Cover the hole in the center of the flower with an embellishment such as a button, plastic gem or felt shape affixed with adhesive dots.
-
4
Affix one to three of the embellished flowers across the top of a metal or plastic barrette with adhesive dots. Allow the petals of the flowers to overlap slightly to ensure you completely cover the top of the barrette.
-
5
Decorate an elastic headband or ponytail holder by stitching the flowers to the elastic. Thread a needle, knot the end of the thread and pull the needle up through the elastic and through one of the petals on the left side of the flower. Push the needle back down through the flower and the elastic, knot the end of the thread and use scissors to trim the excess. Repeat the process with a petal on the right side of the flower.

Tips & Warnings
You can also affix seed beads to the silk flowers with dabs of white glue to save time. The tiny embellishments may chip off the flower as you handle the hair accessory, however.
If you don't have silk flowers available, use foam or paper flowers sold at scrapbooking and craft stores to make the decorated hair accessories. You can also produce your own flower shapes by tracing a flower onto card stock or fabric using a pencil and a shape stencil and cutting it out with sharp scissors.
When you're creating the homemade floral hair accessories for young children to wear, avoid using dimensional accents like rhinestones or buttons. If the child is prone to putting small objects in her mouth, the embellishments will become choking hazards if they fall off the flowers.
