1
Using a measuring cup, measure equal parts sugar and water. Determine how much simple syrup you will need. If there is only a small amount of simple syrup required, start with 1 cup of sugar per 1 cup of water. For a larger quantity of simple syrup, use 2 or 3 cups of sugar and equal parts water. Generally, for cocktails and individual beverages, only 1 cup each of sugar and water is needed.

After measuring your desired amount of water, put the water in a medium saucepan (or larger, if necessary) and bring it to a rolling boil on the stove. Once boiling, remove the water from the stove before adding sugar.

Slowly add sugar to the boiled water, stirring continuously. Try your best to refrain from scraping the bottom of the saucepan while stirring the syrup. Once all the sugar has melted, set the syrup aside to cool.

Once the simple syrup is slightly cooled, put the syrup in a pitcher and place it in the refrigerator. Refrigerate it for at least one to two hours before using.

Tips & Warnings
Increasing the amount of sugar and/or water to your simple syrup recipe will change the structure and composition of the syrup. More sugar will make the substance thicker while more water will make it thinner. Be mindful of any adjustments.
