Battery acid can leave a terrible stain in your driveway or garage. Battery acid stains are not difficult to remove. However, you must be cautious because you will be working with dangerous chemicals. Battery acid stains should be cleaned up immediately as the battery acid will damage your concrete by eating away at the surface. Also, the longer the stain sets, the harder it is to get out.
Things You'll Need
- Protective goggles
- Protective gloves
- Spray bottle
- Chlorine bleach
- Muriatic acid
- Container for runoff water
- Hard bristle brush
Put on your protective gloves, goggles and clothing. Bleach, battery acid and muriatic acid are hazardous chemicals that are very dangerous if they come in contact with your eyes or skin.
Prepare the area by sweeping it clear of any dirt or debris.
Pour chlorine bleach into a spray bottle. Spray affected area until completely covered and let it set for a five minutes. Scrub battery acid stains with a hard bristle brush. If the stain remains, spray on another application of bleach and let it set longer. Scrub the stains again with a brush. If the stains are gone, rinse the area down with a hose. However, if stain is still present proceed to step 4.
Set up a container to collect hazardous runofff water and prevent it from going into any storm drains.
Apply muriatic acid according to manufacturer's directions. Rinse off the acid with a hose, making sure runoff water is contained.
Sprinkle baking soda over the treated area to neutralize the acid.
Take runoff water to a hazardous material recycling center.
