Make sure you have plenty of hard drive space available. Video files are very large, and you will need plenty of storage space to keep your favorite programs. With hard drive storage so cheap these days, it is a good idea to invest in a hard drive with a capacity of at least 500GB, preferably 750GB, or even a terabyte or more.

Install a TV tuner card in your computer. With a USB based TV tuner cards you can bring in your favorite channels and watch live TV right from your own computer. Your TV tuner card may also come with some rudimentary DVR software, although there are better and more full featured options on the market as well.

Choose a quality DVR software program. There are a number of excellent products on the market, including Beyond TV, Sage, and Media Center. Install that DVR software on your computer and set up your recording options.

Set your DVR software to record your favorite programs. Be sure to test the DVR to make sure the programs you have chosen are being recorded. After your shows have been recorded, you can use the remote control that came with your TV tuner card or DVR software package to watch your favorite TV shows on your schedule instead of the networks' schedule.
