You must have a license before you can adjust insurance claims in California.

The first step to getting any insurance adjuster job is to obtain an adjusting license in the state in which you wish to practice. To apply as a resident of California, you must be 18 years old, be a resident of California or have a California business address, and have two years of experience in the adjusting field. Licenses expire May 31 of even years. You are required to maintain a $2,000 bond as an adjuster.

      Download the California insurance adjuster application linked in the Resources section and fill it out completely and truthfully.

      Take the California adjuster exam. Exams are offered daily, and on your application you will indicate when and where you would like to take the exam. Be on time and follow all the instructions given by your proctor. There is no recommended course of study for the exam, but you can take adjuster training courses if you need to prepare. The test covers many areas, which are outlined on the California Department of Insurance site linked in the Resources section.

      Get your fingerprints taken in the same location you take your exam. You can also get them taken at any live scan location.

      Receive your license and maintain your adjuster continuing education to ensure that your license renews as it should.

  • You will have to get 24 continuing education credits every year to keep your license in good standing.
