Start by deciding if you want to attend school full time or part time. If you attend classes part time you can support yourself at the same time. If you attend LPN training full time you can get your LPN certification much more quickly. Some programs may only let you attend full time so find out in advance.

Investigate the program in question completely. In order to get an LPN certificate you will have to attend classes from a college, school of nursing or university that is accredited by the state. The board of nursing in your state oversees all nursing licensing training. Make sure you attend an LPN program that is approved by them.

Complete all class requirements. As an LPN candidate you will be required to take subjects such as chemistry and biology. You will be tested in class on these subjects so be prepared for exams. Buy the textbooks and pay close attention to all assignments that you must complete. Good grades in classes can help you get a job as an LPN once you have completed your certification.

Complete in hospital training. As part of your LPN education you must complete at least some portion of your training at a health care facility. Training will focus on hospital procedures and direct patient care. Such trianing cannnot be completed online. You must work full time in a hospital under the direct supervision of a nursing instructor.

Pass state licensing exams. You must demonstate to state nursing officials that you have mastered the material required to become an LPN. The exam is known as the NCLEX-PN. Exams test your knowledge of all aspects of basic nursing practice. An online LPN program should prepare you to pass this exam. It cannot be taken online.
