How to Determine Eligibility for Additional Child Tax Credit on Federal Income Taxes

The Additional Child Tax Credit was established to help some taxpayers get money back on the otherwise non-refundable Child Tax Credit. The biggest criteria for this credit is that you either make more than $3,000 or pay more Medicare and Social Security taxes than you received in Earned Income Credit, and you have more than two dependent children.

Things You'll Need

  • Income of more than $3,000 or more than two dependent children

Instructions

    • 1

Determine if you earned more than $3,000 in income. You can do this by adding up your earnings and wages from your W-2s.

    • 2

Compare your Social Security and Medicare taxes to your Earned Income Credit. If the former is more than the latter, you may qualify for this credit even if you didn't have $3,000 in earned income. You must also have more than two dependent children.

    • 3

Calculate your Child Tax Credit compared to your tax liability. You will only be able to receive a portion on your Child Tax Credit as a refund if your credit exceeds your tax liability, even if you meet the other two requirements. This is meant as a partial refund of your Child Tax Credit, not as an additional credit.
