Instructions

    • 1

Clean your microwave thoroughly to remove popcorn butter stains, which can harbor odors. Mix 1 tsp. of dish soap with four to six cups of hot water to form a simple cleaning solution. Scrub the interior walls of the microwave thoroughly, and wipe dry with paper towels.

    • 2

Allow the burned popcorn smells residing in the interior microwave vents to dissipate by leaving the door open. Place the microwave outside in a breezy location if possible, for up to 24 hours. Keep the microwave from getting rained on, or it may become unsafe to operate.

    • 3

Place 2 tsp. of coffee grounds and 1/2 cup of water in a bowl. Set the bowl on a saucer to prevent any overflow of fluids, then microwave for two minutes. Carefully remove the hot coffee-and-water mixture. The coffee grounds should act as an odor absorber, removing much of the burned popcorn smell.

    • 4

Microwave 1/2 cup of vinegar for two minutes or until the vinegar begins to fill the microwave with steam. Allow the vinegar to sit in the microwave for 10 minutes so the condensation can fill the microwave, absorbing odors and cleaning the microwave walls. Remove the now-cool vinegar and dry the walls with paper towels. The vinegar smell should cancel out the burned popcorn odor and filter out in a few days.

    • 5

Combine 1/2 cup of water and 1/2 cup of lemon juice. Add 1/4 tsp of whole cloves or other aromatic spice. Microwave for two minutes and allow to cool. This will fill your microwave with pleasant odors and should be potent enough to keep the burned popcorn smell from returning.

    • 6

Absorb the burned popcorn odors completely using charcoal briquettes and newspaper. Crumple the newspaper into small balls and insert it into the microwave, adding briquettes throughout. Close the microwave door and allow to set untouched for two days.
