How to Create a Poster Using Letter-Sized Paper

If you want to print a small poster for anything ranging from a school project poster to a business poster or even to create a poster as a gift for a friend or family member, the process of creating your own custom poster isn't a difficult one. You will need access to a computer, a graphics program and a home or office printer.

Decide on your poster's theme. You might, for example, want to create a montage "doll" poster for your young daughter or you might need to create a poster for a business use including an advertising campaign. Brainstorm your ideas on paper, using a sketchbook or notebook to help formulate your initial design. Remember to leave space for any text you want to incorporate.

Choose a graphics program to design your letter-sized poster with. Photoshop or GIMP are both useful programs to create a poster's design. Open a "New" document by going to "File" and then choosing "New." Pick your background type next , generally you will want to choose a white background, but this will depend on the type of design you have in mind. Remember that you will be printing a "letter sized" poster and therefore you will need to use width and height dimensions that correlate with the standard size poster paper you will be using. Next choose a resolution setting; 300 pixels is a good setting for printing purposes.

Bring in any external graphics you wish to incorporate to your poster's design. For instance, you might want to bring in a several photos if you are intending to create a photo montage, or you may have found some public domain clip art you wish to add. To bring a photo into the program go to "File" then "Open" and select the file, for example, from "My Documents." Then use the "Copy" and "Paste" method to place the images in the main document. Each photo or graphic you bring in it will automatically be placed on a layer in the "Layers Panel." As you add other elements it is wise to create a "New Layer" for each element you create including text or a drawing.

Use the tools within the program to create your design. You can add custom shapes using the "Custom Shape" tool or apply filter effects to text or images. You can also change the settings to make small or large adjustments in color, hue and contrast to name a few. Once you are finished with your design save it as a high-resolution JPEG. If you plan to have it professionally printed you will need to save a copy to a CD. Choose one of two options to print your letter-sized poster, either print it on your home printer or locate a printing service that fits your budget.
