How to Create a Background Layout for Free
A background layout is a picture and/or designs that are added to change your current background. This is a popular tool to use on social networking sites, but more specifically, MySpace. MySpace gives its users complete control of how to manipulate the layout and colors of their page, including the background and text. If you are not familiar with HTML (which stands for Hyper Text Markup Language) you can still create your own background layout. It is also completely free.

1
Search for MySpace layout generators on the Internet. There are a number of websites that offer generators but one in particular that is relatively user friendly is Layouts.fm.
-
2
Navigate to http://www.layouts.fm/generator in your Internet browser. Scroll down the page so you can see the entire MySpace Layout Generator section. Decide whether you want to use an existing picture from the Internet, or if you want to upload your own.

3
Go to the section under "Upload your own image." We will use this example for the purpose of this tutorial. Since you would be using your own picture, you do not have to worry about copyright issues or spending time finding an exact picture you like. Click the "Browse" button and locate a picture on your computer. When you have found it, click Ok.
-
4
Type a name for your background in the "Input name for background" field. Then click the green arrow that says "Start." This will bring you to another page that will show you what your picture looks like on a sample MySpace profile. The profile will be on the top and the customizing tools on the bottom.
-
5
Choose where on the page you want to position your picture. You can click on the small boxes to move the picture around. Next decide if you want the picture to be centered on your profile or to repeat on different areas of your screen. Then choose a background color that will go behind your picture. You can preview each of these items as much as you want to until you are satisfied.
-
6
Click the "Step 2: Block Style" icon, or click the green next arrow. Choose how you want each of the sections of your page to look (for example, your About Me section.) Click on a category to view the styles. If you want to go back to the main category screen, click "Home."
-
7
Update your profile with your new background layout by again clicking either the green next arrow, or the icon that says "Step 3: Update Profile." You will need to enter your MySpace user name and password in order for the background to post to your page. Then click "Add." A new page will pop up telling you that the site is posting your new background to your page. Once it is done it will say if it was successful or not. Click the "Back to layout preview" page. Once you have clicked back, the layout you have created will be added to the list of other user-created layouts.

Tips & Warnings
When searching for pictures to use for your background, try to use pictures that end in JPG or GIF.
To remove the layout you created from your MySpace profile, log in to your account. Click to edit your profile, and remove the HTML code from your "About Me" section.
Consider what type of pictures you want to use if you choose to upload your own picture. If you do not want personal pictures out on the Internet, do not upload one as your background. It becomes property of Layouts.fm after you create your layout.
