How to Rate Chiropractic Schools
If you're considering a chiropractic school, there are many factors that can help determine which college or university is the best to attend based on your own needs. What does it take to be a chiropractor? According to the Council on Chiropractic Education, "The DCP [Doctor of Chiropractic program] must require each student awarded the D.C. degree to have successfully completed not less than 4,200 instructional hours, and must have earned not less than the final 25% of the total credits required for the D.C. degree from the program that confers the degree." While there is no one exact way to rate chiropractic schools, there are resources available---at the reach of a phone or the touch of computer keyboard---to help make your decision easier.

Make sure the school you're considering is accredited. Quality and nationally recognized chiropractic schools will be accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education. Call and ask the school directly if it is accredited and check Cce-usa.org for verification (see References).

Check with your state's regulatory board. While certain schools might be accredited, it's also possible they don't provide all of the courses needed to meet licensing requirements in your state. Speak to practicing chiropractors in your area. Most states have a chiropractic association that lists licensed practitioners. You can find a listing of doctors online or in your local phone book. Either call or email several chiropractors to get their reviews of colleges attended. If you are in the United States, you can also check with the American Chiropractic Association for a listing of licensed doctors.

Check for online reviews or complaints filed against chiropractic schools. Call the Better Business Bureau or the Council on Chiropractic Education and ask if any complaints have been found against the schools you're researching. A review website called PlanetChiropractic.com also provides a rating of schools based on user feedback (see Resources).

I can understand why someone would write this article as it comes from the perspective of a practicing chiropractor however it isn't very good. First of all accreditation is meaningless because the US Dept of Education relaxed requirements back in the 1980s so any illegitimate subject can be licensed, for example astrology schools. Chiropractic fits this category since it is based on quackery, specificially the idea that chiropractors correct biomechanical problems of the spine using manipulation. It's been scientifically shown that this can't happen because these joints are loose and chiropractors have no way to fix the supporting ligaments so they can't maintain a correction even if one was possible. That stated, chiropractors are accepted only as a limited pain treatment for acute problems and insurance limits their visits. Stage boards are made up of chiropractors who protect their own so, like the accreditor and DOE don't expect an honest opinion, even less so for practicing chiropractors who have to support the profession to pay their bills. Oh the bad results and quackery have caught up with the field, 50% of DCs quit in 5 years and earnings continue to decline because of increasing numbers of graduates and a stagnating utilization rate around 8%.
