How to Tie a Leader to a Bimini Twist

There are many different ways to attach a leader to the end of your fishing line. For example, connecting a leader to your line by means of a swivel is ideal in situations where you are trying to avoid undue line twist. However, when using a longer leader a swivel connection that does not fit through your rod guides may inhibit your casting ability. In such situations a leader connection involving a bimini twist knot and a bristol knot could be ideal.

Instructions

    • 1

Tie a bimini twist loop in the end of your fishing line in such a way that you create a two-foot long section of doubled line. See the "Resources" section below to learn how to tie this particular knot.

    • 2

Slip the heavier tag end of your leader through the bimini twist loop.

    • 3

Wrap the tag end of your leader five to seven times around the doubled portion of fishing line. While wrapping the leader around the line, make sure that you keep a gap open at the point where you first inserted the tag end of the leader through the bimini twist loop.

    • 4

Slip approximately six inches of the tag end of the leader back through the gap between the leader and the doubled line that you kept open in Step 3.

    • 5

Pull firmly on the leader and the fishing line until the knot has been pulled tight.

    • 6

Trim away the approximately six-inch tag end of the leader mentioned in Step 4.

Tips & Warnings

  • Moisten the knot with water or saliva prior to pulling the knot tight. If the knot is not moistened, then the line can be damaged by the friction created when the knot is pulled tight.

  • Monofilament line can deliver some nasty cuts to the unwary angler. Handle the line carefully and where possible use gloves or a piece of cloth to help you pull knots tight without risking injury.
