Instructions

    • 1

Power down your HP Pavilion laptop and turn the unit over. Press the battery release lever and pull the battery out of the laptop.

    • 2

Ground yourself before opening up the laptop. Any static electricity could damage the delicate electrical components in your laptop. Wear a grounding strap to protect your computer, or touch a piece of metal to discharge any static electricity. A grounding strap--available at electronics stores and on the Internet--is a cloth bracelet that discharges static electricity.

    • 3

Pry up the end of the plate at the top of the keyboard by using the edge of your flat-head screwdriver. Be careful as you work and slowly pry the cover loose. If your Pavilion laptop uses retaining screws to secure the keyboard, flip the laptop over and remove them. Place the screws in a small cup or butter container to keep them from getting lost.

    • 4

Remove the screws that are used to secure the keyboard to the laptop case. Carefully lift the keyboard free of the case and flip it over the touchpad. The keyboard is attached to the motherboard with a cable, so take care not to stretch or break that cable.

    • 5

Disconnect the flat cable from the keyboard and carefully pull it loose. Remove the replacement keyboard from its packaging and attach the cable to it. Set the replacement keyboard in place and replace the screws that hold it in place. Continue to reassemble the case, then replace the battery and the AC power, turn on the laptop and test the new keyboard.
