How to Reveal Highlights

Each head of human hair contains many shades of color. A blond, for instance, may have bright-gold, dark-honey and strawberry-blond highlights in her hair that make up an overall illusion of one color. A brunette may have mahogany, chestnut and cedar highlights in her hair, while a redhead may have strands of gold and dark auburn. Yet many people still pay for professional highlights and chemical highlight kits to have highlights put into their hair. Chemicals strip hair of its natural protection and often leave it dry and brittle, while artificial color often looks artificial. A very simple way to avoid damage and fake-looking highlights is to bring out your natural highlights with natural ingredients. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Mix together chamomile and lemon juice to highlight blond hair. Add the juice from one lemon to an equal part chamomile tea that has steeped for 10 minutes. Mix one part water with two parts chamomile-lemon mixture and put in a spray bottle.

    • 2

Wash and condition your hair as normal, and spray a generous amount of lemon-chamomile spray onto your hair. Comb a leave-in conditioner through your hair as the chamomile may make it dry. Towel your hair dry lightly and spend some time in the sun or let it dry indoors. Highlights should begin to appear in about two weeks.

Use apple cider vinegar and cinnamon to highlight red hair. Add enough ground cinnamon to 1 cup of apple cider vinegar to make a thin paste. Wash and condition your hair as normal and smear the paste over your hair from roots to ends. Let it dry on your hair and comb it out. The vinegar will condition your hair in addition to highlighting it. You hair will smell of cinnamon, not vinegar, and highlights should begin to appear in about a week and a half.

Mix rosemary and black tea for dark hair. Steep an unflavored black teabag and rosemary in water for about 10 minutes. Bruise and add about 1 tsp. of rosemary per 1 cup of water. Strain the mixture and put it in a spray bottle. Apply it as the lemon-chamomile mixture in Step 1.
