How to Paint BMX Rims Without Unlacing Them
Changing the color of your bike rims for a new look or because the current paint is flaking is a simple task. It is also a great idea for secondhand or used rims, and is more cost effective than buying new rims for the bike. Since most spray paints will work for this type of project, many color options are available. Unlacing the wheels is recommended and will definitely make the paint job look more professional, but you can paint the rims without all the painstaking work of unlacing the wheels.
Things You'll Need
- Sandpaper
- Brown paper
- Scissors
- Masking tape
- Primer
- Spray paint
- Topcoat or sealer
Instructions
-
-
1
Remove the wheels from the bike.
-
2
Sand the area to be painted to rough up the surface and give the paint a good surface to adhere to.
-
-
3
Cut two brown paper circles per wheel to the diameter of the inner rim.
-
4
Tape a paper circle to the inner part of the wheel, covering all of the spokes in to center of the wheel. Be sure to tape both sides of each inner rim to prevent paint from getting on this part of the rim.
-
5
Cover with at least two coats of primer or base coat for an even and smooth coverage. Give the base coat at least 24 hours to dry before painting.
-
6
Paint using long, even strokes to prevent dripping and running. Hold spray can or spray gun at least 8 to 10 inches away from the rim.
-
7
Let the paint dry for about 24 hours, then apply a topcoat to seal the paint job and protect it from damage.
-
8
Remove tape and paper circles. Let the topcoat dry completely.
-
9
Reattach freshly painted rims and wheels to the bike.
