How to Make a Toddler Harness
A child harness is a great gift for a friend, and a handy tool to use for yourself if you are a parent of a young child. A harness gives a child the opportunity to explore the world in a safe manner while parents get to relax a bit when surrounded by crowds, clothing racks or even while out on a walk. If you like the idea, but don't appreciate the options in the stores, consider making your own child harness.
Things You'll Need
- Two 7" x 7" squares of fabric
- Needle and thread or sewing machine
- Extra fabric for the ties and tether

1
Wrap the two pieces of fabric squares together so that their exterior sides are facing each other. Sew around three of the sides, then turn the material so that it is right-side-out and sew the fourth side. This is the section that will go across a child's chest.
-
2
Hold the square to a child's chest and measure the distance from the side edge of the square to the center of the child's back. And 2 to 3 inches to give the child room to grow. This will be the length of the waist strap.

3
Cut two pieces of fabric according to the measurement you just took. Sew one end of one of the pieces of fabric to the left side edge of the front square fabric. Do the same on the right side edge with the other piece of fabric.
-
4
Add some hook-and-latch pieces to the non-secured ends, making sure they overlap each other and secure solidly.
-
5
Fasten the front part of the harness to the child by securing the ties around the child's waist. Measure the distance from the top of the fabric square, over the shoulder, to the waist strap adding an inch or two for growth. Remove the harness.
-
6
Use scissors to cut two more pieces of fabric according to the shoulder measurement you just took. Sew one end of the fabric onto the top left part of the square that covers the child's chest and attach the other end to the waist strap using hook and latch pieces. Repeat this step on the top right part of the square and over the other shoulder to the waist strap.
-
7
Sew a tether to the back part of the harness, making it your desired length. Make a loop at the free end for your wrist and fasten it with hook and latch or with a needle and thread.
