How to Unscrew Broken Light Bulbs

When a light bulb breaks in a light fixture, it is not always easy to get it out without getting hurt. A light bulb that is all in one piece is easy to remove because it provides a handle in the form of the bulb's glass globe. The base of a broken light bulb ends up stuck tightly in the light fixture. Nothing is safe to grab because the only thing sticking out of the fixture is broken glass. You also risk electric shock if the fixture still has power. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Check the power switch of the light fixture. Make sure it is switched to the off position.

    • 2

Put the rubber soled shoes on your feet and the rubber gloves on your hands. This will provide an extra layer of insulation against electric shock in the event the light switch is on or if anyone accidentally flips the switch while you are removing the bulb.

    • 3

Push the potato onto the broken glass edge of the bulb. You will have to press firmly so the glass pierces the potato.

    • 4

Turn the potato counterclockwise to remove the broken bulb.

    • 5

Let the light fixture air dry completely before inserting a new light bulb.
