How to Hook Up a DVD to an Old Style TV

Televisions in the past were only made with one type of connection for an antenna. That connection was a standard coaxial cable input. That was fine for antennas and cable television, but with the advent of DVD players, coaxial inputs are no longer good enough. DVD players use either RCA cables or more advanced high quality cables. In most cases a DVD player can still be connected indirectly to an old style TV.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect a VCR to your TV using coaxial cables. Old style TVs have one coaxial input. Plug the VCR out to the TV coaxial input port. Plug any cable or antenna into the VCR in connection.

    • 2

Connect the DVD player to the VCR. Most DVD and VCRs will have both RCA in and out connections. Connect RCA cables to the output from the DVD player and to the input on the VCR. There are three cables to connect, two for audio and one for video. Audio cables usually have red or white ends and video has yellow.

Turn on the VCR. Watch the television through the VCR. Use the VCR video button to change the video source to what is coming in through the RCA cables. You can now play your DVDs.
