How to Get Rid of Trojan Rootkit

A Trojan rootkit is a type of malicious software program that installs itself on your computer under the guise of being a legitimate program. Rootkit software can be difficult to remove, and it can even download and install other types of malicious software. You can try to remove a Trojan rootkit, but you may need to reinstall the operating system to make your computer usable again.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Restart your computer and press the F8 key while it is booting up. A screen will display that gives you a list of boot options. Choose the option "Safe mode with networking" and press the "Enter" key.

  2. Step 2

Log in to Windows and open a web browser. Download an anti-rootkit program such as those linked in References. Also download an anti-malware utility, such as Malwarebytes or Spybot Search & Destroy, also linked herein.

  3. Step 3

Install and launch the anti-rootkit program and run a full system scan. You may be prompted to restart your computer one or more times during the scan, because rootkits routinely install themselves in system files that are unaccessible while the computer. These files have to be scanned during start-up to detect the rootkit.

  4. Step 4

Remove the rootkit from your computer, if one is found. Install and launch the anti-malware program and run a full system scan with it. If this program detects any infections, remove them and restart your computer.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the rootkit can't be removed, back up your data and reinstall your operating system. This measure might seem extreme, but it is safer than working on an infected computer that can allow your personal information to be stolen.
