How to Dress Professional for Cheap

Dressing professionally can be an expensive proposition, especially if you're just starting out in a new job. Even a week's worth of new work clothes can run in the thousands of dollars. However, you can build a working professional wardrobe for a fraction of what you'd spend at a name brand store. It's mostly a matter of research, shopping and a clever combination of items.

1. Determine the dress code of your desired workplace. During your interview, pay attention to what level and kind of dress people are wearing. Check websites for companies in the industry you want to enter. As different industries have different definitions of "professional attire," this will help you avoid wasting money on inappropriate outfits.

2. Make a list of what you'll need. Just like grocery shopping, entering the store with a list in hand will help keep you under budget. Keep in mind that this only works if you stick to the list.

3. Check discount clothing stores for the items you want. These can include factory outlets, manufacturer's seconds and overstock galleries, thrift stores, resale shops. Some Internet sites also offer new clothing for prices comparable to discount outlets.

4. Remember to combine items to multiply your wardrobe options. Two jackets, three shirts and two pairs of pants equal 12 different outfits. You can expand these options even further with a couple of basic accessories.

5. Don't worry about shoes. You only need one pair, and you probably have one that will do until your first few paychecks come in.

Tips & Warnings

• Don't panic about professional dress. Most people without a work wardrobe are in that position because they're just starting out. After a few paychecks, you'll be able to afford better clothes. To start, just get enough clothes to get by for those first few weeks.
