How to Knit an Easy Baby Sweater and more free patterns
This little Winkie sweater is darling and an old vintage design, which this writer has transposed for DK weight yarn. It has buttons on both shoulders for easy over the head. The finished measurement is 24" or 61cm at the chest. Size 2 toddler. A great beginner project for gift or your own new baby. The sweater is two big squares, with a square neckline, and a very simple project. Made with a moss stitch edging and a diamond shaped detail to give some stitch definition. For boys and girls alike. The sweater being knitted in the photo above is using Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK. Gauge is 6st to one inch on #5 needle.
Back:
Using Size 5 needles, cast on (CO) 65 stitches (st). Moss st (K1,P1) for 5 rows. Wrongside (WS) Purl.
2nd row: Knit.
3rd row Purl.
4th row K4, *p1, k7* repeat from * to end, last repeat k4.
5th Row: P3 *K1, P1, K1, P5, repeat from*, end last repeat P3.
Row 6: Repeat 4th row.
Row 7: purl.
Row 8: Knit.
Row 9: Purl.
Row 10: K8 *p1, k7 from*, end last repeat K8
Row 11: P7, *K1, P1, K1, P5, repeat from *, end last repeat P7.
Row 12:, same as row 10.
Repeat these last 12 rows until 7.5 inches or 19 cm.
BO 3st each end next two rows for underarm. 59 st remain. Work even in pattern as established until armhole measures 4 inches or 10 cm. -

Neck shaping: (Right side) Moss st across entire front (MS) 5 rows. Then with RS facing, Moss stitch across 18st. Put on st holder. CO next 23st for neck. Moss st. to end of row. Now you are on the left side, wrong side of work. Work 5 rows MS. Cast off these 18st. Left side is completed. Now slide the stitches from the holder for the right shoulder onto the needle, You will be starting on the wrong side. Repeat same for second side. ( Work 5 rows MS. Cast off these 18st.)

Sleeves:
CO 37st. MS 13 rows.
Row 1: WS, Purl.
Next row: Knit, Make 1 (M1) in 2nd st and continue until 2st from end, K1, M1, K1. (39st)
Row 3: Purl.
Row 4: K3 *P1, K7* repeat between *'s ending K3. Continue with Row 5 of pattern as established and written in Step 1, increasing 1st each end as before every 4th row, working added st into pattern to 85st. CO at 9th row of pattern. Make two. -

To finish, sew seams along body, sewing shoulder seams for 1 in from armhole. Sew in sleeves with sleeve seam at center underarm. Work 1 row single crochet (sc) on neck edge and shoulder openings, with 2 buttonloops (ch3 sk1) on each front shoulder edge. Sew 2 baby buttons on each side shoulder edge.
