Building a miniature doll house

Design a rough blue print of the doll house you intend to build, making sure that you note the exact dimensions for each of the sides of the house. It is important that you make note that the house structure and the ceiling structure will be built separately so that the child can easily remove the roof to play with the dolls inside.

Cut the ply board to the precise measurements you determine on your blue print. Ideally, you should be able to piece together the doll house as if it were a prefabricated kit. One trick to keep in mind is to design the rear of the doll house with a taller wall so that the roof can be a single piece that naturally slants.

Cut doorways and windows using a jig saw. A doll house will provide little fun if there is no easy way for the dolls to get in and out and see around.

Paint the surfaces, both exterior and interior before actually assembling the doll house. Because of its small size, painting a fully assembled doll house will pose many problems and could result in a rather messy looking finished product.

Stand the doll house walls on end and glue the corners together using strong wood glue. Apply firm pressure until the pieces are solidly set. If the joining is wobbly, you may need to try a stronger adhesive to make sure the house can stand up under regular play.

Install a hook on the bottom of the roof and a metal eye on the interior back wall of the house at the very top of the wall. This will be where you secure the roof in place when little hands are not reaching inside.
