How to Reuse Above Ground Pools

One of the biggest advantages of choosing an above-ground pool over an in-ground model is the fact that above-ground swimming pools can be moved from place to place. If you are moving to a new home, you can disassemble your above-ground pool and take it with you--something you certainly could not do with an in-ground swimming pool. You also can move your above-ground swimming pool to a new spot in your yard, although it is important to take care when taking down and moving that pool. Does this Spark an idea?

Drain all the water from the pool by locating the drain plug and removing it. Make sure that all the water has drained out of the pool before disassembling it. It is a good idea to allow the pool to sit in the sun for at least a couple of hours to make sure that any standing water has evaporated.

Begin to disassemble the pool. If you are working with a metal frame pool, you need to remove the T caps, pull the metal pieces out of their holders, and set the frame and the metal panels aside. If you are working with an inflatable pool, you can deflate the top ring and allow the pool to go down.

    • 3

Place the pieces of the pool into large boxes if you will be moving it to a new home. If you are moving the pool to a new location in your back yard, you can carry the pieces to their new spot. When moving the pool liner and ground cover, pick it up and carry it. Avoid dragging those pieces on the ground, because you could tear the liner and damage the ground cover.

    • 4

Make sure that the new spot you have scoped out for your pool is perfectly level. When installing an above-ground pool, it is critical that the ground be perfectly level. If the ground is not level, the weight of the water will cause the pool to become unstable. In addition, the water will start to slosh out of the low side of the pool, meaning that you will not be able to fill the pool to its maximum depth.

    • 5

Set the bottom of the pool on the level spot you have prepared. Make sure that all of the wrinkles are smoothed out of the pool liner before proceeding. This is an important preliminary step that will affect the way your finished pool behaves.

    • 6

Blow up the top ring if you are setting up an inflatable above-ground pool. If you are working with a metal frame pool, assemble the frame according to the instructions you received with your pool. Continue assembling the pool, checking to make sure the ground is level. After the pool is fully assembled, you can begin filling it with water.
