Save

Water heaters are available from many manufacturers, such as A.O. Smith, which can have different options for adjusting the temperature of the unit. Adjusting the temperature can be done to increase or decrease the temperature of the water that may be needed for a bath or shower. The temperature for an A.O. Smith water heater can be adjusted by first determining the optimal temperature level required.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Turn off the power to the heater by turning off the circuit from the circuit box.

  • Locate the two access panels for the water heater. One is near the middle of the unit, and the other is towards the bottom.

  • Remove the screws that are used to secure the access panels with a flat head screwdriver.

  • Place the flat head screwdriver into the groove on the adjusting knob and turn it to the temperature setting that is needed.

  • Replace the access covers and tighten the screws to secure them in place.

  • Turn on the power to the water heater to complete the project.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you set the temperature to between 120 and 130 degrees, you can save money on your electric bill.
  • Do not set the temperature below 120 degrees or the water will not get hot enough to kill bacteria when you wash dishes by hand or with a dishwasher.
