How to Replace a Traverse Cord
Replacing a draw cord is a necessary part of the maintenance of traverse rods. Traverse rods help to lengthen the life of your drapery by allowing the user to open the drapes with a draw cord instead of pulling on the fabric. Traverse cords can become knotted over time, fray and even break. When this happens, the cord has to be replaced. Replacing the traverse cord requires a little patience and attention to the pulleys. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Lift the traverse rod off of the wall and lay it on a flat surface. Clip the old cord with the scissors and remove it from the traverse rod by pulling the knots in the upper carriage.
-
2
Lay the worn cord down end to end and measure the length with your measuring tape. The replacement cord will need to be cut to this length. The replacement cord must be the same thickness as the worn cord.

3
Insert the end of the replacement cord through the upper carriage's right hole and tie a knot. Move to the right end of the traverse rod. Insert the other end of the replacement cord above the top pulley. Continue around this pulley and go between the top and bottom pulleys on the right.
-
4
Pull the cord all the way through the bridge and on to the lower carriage. Do not lock the cord at this point. Do not allow the cord to twist as you pull it through the traverse curtain rod.
-
5
Pull the cord to the left and between the two pulleys on the left. Make sure the cord is tight. Lift the cord's loose end and pull it over the pulley on top. The excess cord will form a loop down to the floor. Insert the end through the hole in the upper carriage. Pull this end to adjust the draw cord length. Tie a knot near the upper carriage to secure in place. Cut off the excess cord.

6
Rehang the traverse rod in its support brackets. Check to ensure the drawstring works smoothly without jumping.

Do not force your draw cords to work. Pull on them gently. If you meet interference, take the rods down and inspect them; you may be able to avoid replacing the cord.
Only cord made for traverse rods should be used to ensure fit of the cord with the moving parts.
