How to Sew Flannel Pants

The texture of flannel fabric is soft and its slightly heavy weight makes it feel warm against the skin. Flannel pants are especially comfortable to wear when the weather is chilly but the breathable nature of the fabric also allows for comfort in warmer weather. Making or repairing flannel pants can be challenging because the fabric is woven and woven fibers easily unravel. The key is to finish the seams properly.

Instructions

    • 1

If you are mending a seam on a pair of flannel pants, trim off the frayed edge of the fabric with scissors but do not cut into the body of the pants. Skip to Step 3.

    • 2

If you are making flannel pants from a pattern, spread the fabric on a flat surface and pin the pattern pieces to the fabric. Cut around the outside of the pattern pieces using the scissors, then pin the pieces together according to pattern directions.

    • 3

Set the sewing machine on a medium-length, straight stitch and sew the seams.

    • 4

Set the sewing machine on its zigzag setting. The stitch length should be short, while its width should be as wide as possible to prevent fraying on the edge of the finished seams.

    • 5

Sew all unfinished edges of the flannel fabric with the zigzag finishing stitch. To provide extra strength to the straight seam, sew the edges with the seam closed so it resembles the way manufacturers make seams. If you prefer a flat appearance, finish each edge of the seam separately and then press the seam open with an iron.
