How to Fix My Computer's CD Writing Function

The CD writing function on your computer can become impaired for one of two general reasons--hardware failures within the drive itself or software issues. Solving software issues is the easier of the two, so begin there and eliminate that as a possible problem before opening up your computer case to fiddle around with the hardware. In general, you should be able to diagnose (and hopefully fix) the problem within a few hours.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove your current CD burning software by navigating to the "Start" menu, then to the "Control Panel," then to the "Add/Remove Programs" list. From there, click on your CD burning software and press the uninstall button.

    • 2

Reinstall the CD burning software by using your installation CD and following the on-screen instructions for your particular piece of software. Over time, the files in the burning program could have become corrupted, so a simple reinstallation might solve your CD burning issues.

    • 3

Download the device driver for your CD burner by going to the manufacturer webpage, then to the "Support" section, then to the "Download" section. Enter your model number and download the driver to your desktop.

    • 4

Reinstall the driver by navigating to the "Start" menu, then to the "Control Panel," then to the "Device Manager." Click on the option for DVD/CD-Rom drives, then double click on the entry for your burner. Click on the "Driver" tab, then click "Update Driver," entering in your desktop as the location of the new driver to begin the update process.

    • 5

Open your case by removing the screws on the rear-right of the machine and sliding off the side panel. Once there, check the connections to your CD-R drive. Remove and replace all of the cables, blowing into them to remove any dust that could disrupt the connection.
