How to Find a URL at a Website

As websites grow larger and host more information, one of the challenges of using the Internet is finding a specific URL on a website that you know exists but whose location is not readily apparent when you search through the website's menu system. In a situation like this, it is often easier to find a specific URL by using an outside search engine that has already cataloged the entire content of the website. Use the site search capability of Google to find a URL on a website that you are unable to find when searching the site directly.

Instructions

    • 1

Browse to the Google search engine at www.google.com.

    • 2

Type the word or phrase that you would like to search a website for. If you would like to search for an exact phrase such as a person's name, put it in quotation marks. Insert a space after the search term.

    • 3

Type the word "site" followed by a colon.

    • 4

Type the address of the site that you would like to search, e.g. "example.com." If your goal is to search example.com for the word "computers," your Google search would look like this: computers site:example.com.

    • 5

Click the "Google Search" button. The list of results will contain only URLs hosted by the website that you have specified containing the word or phrase that you have entered.

Tips & Warnings

  • The steps given in this article may also be used to search Google for only sites with a certain extension. For example, the phrase "site:.edu" may be used to search only educational websites.
