How to Find a Driver for a USB to Serial Converter

If you are attempting to connect a piece of hardware via serial port to your computer, you more than likely need a USB-to-serial adapter. Most computers do not have serial ports any more, but all computers currently produced have an assortment of USB ports. A serial-to-USB adapter allows you to connect a serial device to the USB port, but you do need to have the converter's drivers installed on the computer before the computer knows how to properly recognize the device.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer
  • USB-to-serial converter
  • Drivers
  • Internet access
  • Look for a CD packaged with your adapter. Most USB-to-serial adapters have a driver installation CD included with the purchase.

  • Launch your Internet browser and go to the website for the store you purchased the converter from. Look up the converter you bought, and there may be a link listed for a driver download.

  • Navigate to the manufacture site of the converter you purchased. Find "Support and Downloads" and locate the device you purchased. Select the operating system you are running and download the drivers.

  • Initiate the driver installation by either inserting the installation CD or double-click the downloaded driver. Follow the prompts presented to you to complete the installation.
