How to Rewax a Meerschaum Pipe

Meerschaum (hydrous magnesium silicate) is one of the most porous naturally-occurring minerals, which makes it excellent for tobacco smoking. "Meerschaum" is German for "sea foam" and it refers to the light and airy feel of the mineral. Meerschaum pipes are carved and then dipped in beeswax, which gives them a soft, distinctive sheen. Though they need very little maintenance, occasionally you will need to re-wax a meerschaum pipe. You need to be very careful when cleaning meerschaum pipes, because the material is so porous. But re-waxing a meerschaum pipe is not difficult, and can add years to your smoking pleasure.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix one part isopropyl alcohol with three parts warm water.

    • 2

Dip a clean, lint-free cloth into the solution, and wring it out until it is barely damp. Gently wipe the outside of your meerschaum pipe.

    • 3

Use a cotton swab twisted tightly, dipped into the solution and shaken almost dry to clean any intricate carvings on your pipe. Wipe the pipe dry with a clean, soft cloth.

    • 4

Dip a corner of a clean cloth into some beeswax or carnauba wax and gently apply it to the outside of your pipe's bowl.

    • 5

Let the pipe dry for a minute and then buff it to a shine with a clean cloth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never clean your meerschaum pipe while it is hot; let it cool completely.
