How to Troubleshoot a Telephone Jack

A telephone jack is the outlet on the wall into which you plug a telephone. It can connect a phone with up to three lines, although most phones use only one line. If the phone connected to the jack fails to provide a dial tone, you may need to reconnect the wiring to the jack. This can occur when the wiring fails due to corrosion or simple wear and tear. Instructions

    • 1

Ensure that the telephone jack is causing the problem. Check other jacks in your home to make sure you have phone service. Plug your phone into another jack to make sure the phone works. If the phone and the other jacks work properly, the problem likely lies with the jack.

    • 2

Remove the faceplate from the wall. This usually requires unscrewing two long screws from the faceplate and gently pulling the faceplate away from the wall.

    • 3

Take note of the terminal screw to which each colored wire is connected. Unscrew the terminal screws and disconnect the wiring from each of them.

    • 4

Snip off any corroded or worn ends from each wire to ensure a good connection. Strip 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch of insulation from each wire and wrap the bare wire around the corresponding terminal screw. Make sure the bare wires don't touch each other.

    • 5

Tighten each terminal so that it holds the wire securely in place. Plug the phone into the jack to check for a dial tone. If you don't hear one, check the wiring to correct any problems until you do hear a clear dial tone. Fasten the faceplate to the wall by screwing the long screws into the faceplate.
