How to Fix Digital Photo Errors

Oftentimes, digital photos suffer from some of the same errors as film photos. Unlike film mistakes, digital pictures can often be corrected using an image-editing software package, such as Photoshop. There are many image editing software packages available to choose from, all of which offer many correcting features. The simplest errors to fix include adjusting an image that's too dark or too light. Certain color issues can also be corrected. And, with a little work, you can fix problems such as having a thumbprint on the side of the image, or even aesthetic issues such as removing unsightly features of a photograph.

Load your digital photograph into your image-editing software package.

Lighten too-dark pictures or darken too-light pictures. Locate the brightness, contrast and auto adjust options. In Photoshop, you can find these on the toolbar under "Images" and then under "Adjust." Here you can first try "Auto Levels." If that does not correct the darkness (or correct a too-light picture), then undo that step and try adjusting the levels yourself using "Brightness" and "Contrast."

Crop the photo to get rid of anything unwanted along the side of the picture, such as a thumbprint or even a feature such as a pillar that spoils the photo's image. To crop, you typically select the cropping tool and then click on the picture and pull the tool, creating a box around the image. Everything inside the box, you'll keep. Whatever is outside the crop-box will be cut away and discarded.

Use a stamp tool to mask any unwanted features in the photograph. Click on the tool and click to select what part of the image you want to copy or stamp over another portion. So if there is something unsightly on a wall in an otherwise nice photo, click on a good portion of the wall to establish the copy piece. Then stamp this over the unsightly portion. It can be used to "erase" a thermostat or cover up a crack in the wall. Likewise, you can repair floor and other portions of the photograph so long as there is a good patch to use for the copy pattern.

Correct color issues. Some color issues, such as the shades coming out a touch wrong can be corrected using "Hue Saturation" and "Replace Color" features. These features can be found in "Image" and then under "Adjust" in Photoshop.

Correct a slightly fuzzy image with sharpening features. In Photoshop, try clicking on "Filters" in the toolbar then select "Sharpen." From there, try "Sharpen" and "Sharpen Edges" to see which helps more.
