How to Get Further Range for a WiFi Card

WiFi (wireless fidelity) is a popular way to access the Internet. WiFi allows mobility and flexibility for computer users, allowing them to quickly gain access to the Internet at home and in public places. WiFi range has many variables, including the line of sight, conditions and antennae length.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the WiFi router for maximum access throughout your work area. Create optimal wireless coverage by minimizing the number of interferences between the router and computer. Steer clear of cordless phones, microwaves and other WiFi connections.

    • 2

Determine if there is an external antennaw connection on your WiFi card. Extend your antennae. Determine the type of connector on your antennae if possible. Choose an antennae with the same polarization as all of the other antennae you are using so you can get the most out of it. Mixing topologies will create a weaker, less reliable connection due to an increase in the signal-to-noise ratio.Keep cable length to a minimum to avoid losing signal strength over distance.

    • 3

Create range boost by placing aluminum foil behind the antenna, causing it reflect the signal back toward the router. Fashion cardboard and aluminum foil, metallic duct tape or other metal into a curve and place it directly behind your wireless device or your router's antenna to amplify the signal.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose a WiFi card with high sensitivity (200mW with -90dBm to -96 dBm) to allow you to increase your distance from the access point while still maintaining the signal.

  • Upgrade your router and software, taking advantage of the latest available technology.
