How to Make a Matchbox Microscope

Using a matchbox to create a microscope gives parents and teachers an easy way to introduce children to science. Simple microscopes can be made using household objects, and the whole project can be completed quickly and easily. A matchbox microscope offers a new way to explore scientific experiments around the house.
Adult supervision is required for any child making a microscope out of a matchbox, as some small and sharp objects are needed for the completion of the project.

Instructions

    • 1

Open and empty out the matchbox. Cut out one of the sides of the matchbox sleeve. Leave about 1/8 inch around the edge.

    • 2

Cut a piece of clear plastic sheeting to fit the open end of the matchbox where the inner tray is placed into the box.

    • 3

Attach the clear plastic sheeting to the matchbox with cello tape or clear tape.

    • 4

Close the matchbox so the clear plastic sheeting faces upward.

    • 5

Place a small amount of petroleum jelly on the plastic and spread it evenly around with a toothpick to help make the lens.

    • 6

Use the dropper to put a small amount of water on the petroleum jelly.

    • 7

Place a small object or drop of water on the tray inside the microscope and look through the lens at it to magnify it. Slide the outer part of the matchbox up and down to focus on the object.
