How to Wire a DVR VCR to a TV

DVR/VCR combo units provide the convenience of new technology with the familiarity of the old in a compact component. For people who own old videotapes, the combo unit is a good choice for upgrading to digital media while still getting life out of a VHS collection. The combo unit connects to a TV with color-coded composite audio/video cables, available at electronics stores, for fast setup.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the plugs on one set of composite cables to the video and audio "IN" jacks on the DVR/VCR combo, using the white and red plugs for the left and right audio connections. The yellow plug connects to the yellow video "IN" jack.

    • 2

Insert the plugs on the other end into the AV "OUT" jacks on the TV, using the yellow, white and red color codes to match the plugs to the jacks. This cable transmits picture and sound from the television for recording to the DVR/VCR.

    • 3

Connect a second set of cables from the DVR/VCR "OUT" jacks to the audio/video "IN" jacks on the back of the TV, again using the same color codes. This cable transmits audio and video during playback from the DVR/VCR to the television.

Tips & Warnings

  • Connect the TV to a programming source, such as cable or satellite TV, by attaching the coaxial cable from the source to the RF "IN" jack on the TV. Secure the cable to the TV jack by turning a coupler clockwise on the end of the cable.

  • Do not plug the components into a wall outlet until the composite cable connections are complete.
