How to Make a Paper Bonsai Tree
If you like the idea of having a decorative bonsai tree, but don't like the idea of caring for one, a bonsai tree made of paper mache might be a good substitute. A paper bonsai tree combines the aesthetic appeal of a real bonsai tree with the low-maintenance of silk flower arrangements. A paper mache tree has an artistic appeal all its own, as well as conveying a do-it-yourself pride to its owner.

1
Form the basic structure of your tree by cutting sections of 18 and 22 gauge wires for your tree trunk and branches. Solder the wire together to form a basic tree structure, and then bend the trunk and branches to form a windswept, twisted tree shape.
-
2
Cut model maker's foam to fit inside a bonsai pot. Cover with model maker's moss to form a realistic base for your tree.

3
Make paper mache by mixing one part flour to five parts water. Boil this mixture for three minutes. Allow to cool and form a thick paste. Tear brown crepe paper into strips. Dip the strips into the paste.

4
Measure enough of the wire trunk to insert into the foam base. At a point above this measurement, begin to wrap paste-covered brown strips around the shaped tree trunk. Smooth out the strips and the paste so that the trunk is a smooth, uniform brown color. When you have finished wrapping the trunk, allow it to dry.

5
Insert the exposed wire below the trunk of your paper tree into the model foam base in the bonsai flower pot. Cut or fold leaves and flower blossoms from crepe paper and glue them to the ends of your branches using a hot glue gun.
