How to Cook a Deer Roast in a Crock Pot

Venison is high in protein, B vitamins and iron and low in saturated fat, which typically is found in fatty cuts of meat. While some people believe deer meat has a somewhat gamey taste, many people feel it is rich in flavor. Slow cooking in a Crock- Pot will remove some of the gamey taste. Although some deer meat is procured through hunting, a lot of deer now are farm-raised and the venison available at grocery stores and meat markets. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 3 pounds deer roast
  • Flour
  • Salt
  • Butter
  • 1 tbsp. soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp. California-blend garlic salt
  • Ground black pepper
  • 1 package onion or mushroom dry soup mix
  • 1 can (10 3/4-oz.) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 pound small carrots
  • 1 can (14-oz.) beef broth

Instructions

      Trim fat off venison roast.

      If frozen, thaw venison. Rinse venison roast. Place butter in skillet and heat on medium low. Rub roast with salt, coat lightly with flour and brown in butter.

      Mix all other ingredients, except onions, carrots and broth, in Crock-Pot. Add roast.

      Place sliced onions and carrots in Crock-Pot; add broth. Cover pot and cook on low for 6 to 10 hours.

Tips & Warnings

  • To remove a strong odor from venison, soak it in salt, vinegar and water or in buttermilk, tomato or apple juice for several hours. Venison also can be cooked with bacon to remove the gamey taste.
