How to Disable Port 25 on McAfee

Save

Computer networks use many different ports in order to transmit and receive information. Port 25 communicates with local servers in order to deliver outbound e-mail messages. However, a computer infected with a virus can become part of a "botnet" -- essentially, a network of computers used to deliver spam -- and abuse port 25 in order to send spam e-mail to a number of recipients within a network. Blocking port 25 in McAfee VirusScan will prevent viruses from sending spam mail in the event your computer becomes infected. Port 25 is automatically blocked in McAfee, but if at some point you unblocked it on your computer, it is easy to disable port 25 again.

  • Locate the McAfee icon in your taskbar. Double-click the icon to launch the application. You can also run the program by clicking "Start > All Programs > McAfee > McAfee VirusScan."

  • Click "Virus Scan Enterprise > Virus Scan Console." Double-click "Virus Protection." Click the "Access Protection" tab.

  • Check "Prevent mass mailing worms from sending mail." This will disable port 25. Click "Apply" to save your settings, then click "OK."
