How to Access Start Up Programs on XP

Start-up programs are programs that launch automatically when you start your computer. Too many start-up programs consume memory and cause slow start-up and shutdown speeds. Besides system components such as drivers, antivirus programs and security tools, other programs such as messenger applications and media players also launch at start-up. Managing start-up programs allows you to decide which programs to run when you want them to.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove programs from the Start menu's Start-up folder to decrease boot time. The more programs the Startup folder contains, the longer your computer takes to boot. To remove programs from the Startup folder, click the Windows "Start" menu and click "Run." Type "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup" (without quotes) and press "Enter" to open the Startup folder. Right-click the items you do not want and click "Delete." It is safe to delete items in the Startup folder without risking, modifying or damaging any existing programs because everything in this folder is a shortcut.

Suspend certain start-up programs from the System Configuration Utility console as an alternative, if you do not want them to launch automatically when you start your computer. To do so, click the Windows "Start" menu and click "Run" to launch the command box.

Type "msconfig" (without quotes) and press "Enter" to launch the System Configuration Utility. Click the "Startup" tab to view the programs and system tools that launch automatically when you start your computer.

    • 4

Uncheck the programs that you do not want to launch in the Windows Registry when you start your computer. Alternatively, you can click the programs and click "Disable" to prevent them from starting at computer start-up. Disable programs such as update tools, messenger or photo applications. Do not disable antivirus programs or other security tools. Do not disable files labeled as part of the "Windows" folder.

Click "Apply" to save the changes and click "OK." When prompted, restart your computer.
